Greenpeace UK warns investors against tar sands

A Greenpeace UK report has found that UK oil giants BP and Shell have underestimated the risk of investing in the tar sands. The report, co-authored by Greenpeace and PLATFORM and entitled BP and Shell, Rising Risks in Tar Sands Investment, has won the backing of several influential investment firms. "We always knew that tar sands were a risk to the climate, but now it's becoming clear that they're a risk to the bottom line as well," said Mike Hudema, Greenpeace tar sands campaigner. "Albertans should be aware of the monstrous economic risks that their government is taking on their behalf."

AbitibiBowater: Actions speak louder than words

Greenpeace took out a full-page ad in the Globe and Mail this month to remind Canada's largest logging company that their logging activities must change. Logging giant AbitibiBowater is unwilling to work at protecting intact forest areas and continues to log in many critical areas of the Boreal Forest, including caribou habitat. The ad reminds AbitibiBowater that actions speak louder than words and it is not enough to just talk about sustainability.

The World According to Monsanto

Canada has some of the weakest regulations in the world around genetically engineered (GE) food and crops. Why? A new documentary, 'The World According to Monsanto,' demonstrates that powerful chemical corporations like Monsanto likely have something to do with it. Monsanto—which has offices in 46 countries—is responsible for 90 percent of the GE crops grown worldwide.
