Canada named Colossal Fossil at UN climate conference
A pivotal international conference on climate change just wrapped up in Poznan, Poland. The conference was a disappointment. Developed countries did not respond to the urgent need to stop climate change now. Canada's environment minister, Jim Prentice, shamed us on the international stage, sticking to negligible reductions for Canada and blocking consensus on international targets. As a result, Canada received the dubious distinction of the "Colossal Fossil" award. When it comes to climate change, we are now officially an international pariah. But don't despair. Yet. There is still something we can all do.

Greenpeace Canada executive director turns himself in for the 'Tokyo Two'
Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki face ten years in jail for exposing the fact that a 'scientific whaling' vessel was smuggling whale meat into Japan. Last week, Greenpeace Canada executive director Bruce Cox presented himself at the Japanese embassy in Ottawa, asking to be named a co-defendant in the case. On the same day in Japan, the executive directors of Greenpeace offices including Japan, Germany, Australia, Brazil and the United States went to the office of Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso to call for an end to the Japanese government-funded whale hunt in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Hackers help destroy the Amazon
Logging companies intent on plundering the Amazon rainforest have been using hackers to break into the Brazilian government's sophisticated tracking system and fiddle with the records. The result of the hacking scandal: nearly 1.7 million cubic metres of illegal timber have been smuggled out of the Amazon, enough to fill 780 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
