Dear friends,
What the British Columbia government promised
-
Two million hectares protected from logging;
-
Forest practices that maintain ecosystem integrity;
-
Increased decision-making power for First Nations;
-
Support for a conservation-based economy for First Nations.
Greenpeace has been working hard to ensure the deadline is kept. Several key commitments, such as the protection of two million hectares from logging, have been reached, but more work must be done to fulfill all commitments. Otherwise, the ecological health of the Great Bear Rainforest remains at risk.
Greenpeace needs your help to remind British Columbia's Premier Gordon Campbell and his government to "Keep the Promise" they made to protect the Great Bear Rainforest. Right now, there is little time left to finish a lot of vital work and we need your help!
The time is now
The March 31, 2009 deadline for full implementation of the historic Great Bear Rainforest agreements looms ever nearer. The government needs to pull out all the stops, or else the Great Bear Rainforest will remain in jeopardy. In February 2006, Premier Campbell announced the Great Bear Rainforest Agreements, committing to protect the ecological health of the Great Bear Rainforest by March 31, 2009. We have less than two months left to get these promises fulfilled.
Habitat preservation helps Grizzly Bears
The Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the world, a rare and precious ecosystem that is part of our country's diverse ecological legacy. It is home to the 'Spirit Bear', forest-nesting marbled murrelet sea birds, salmon-eating coastal wolves and many other species whose habitat remains at risk until the agreements are fully implemented. Realizing the Great Bear Rainforest agreements will mean a healthier and happier home for many of Canada's most cherished species, in particular its grizzly bears. One of the most important ways of protecting bears is through habitat preservation and the Great Bear Rainforest agreements will safeguard many old-growth areas these animals call home.
The countdown is on
We have come so far and are so close to achieving our goal for the world's largest intact coastal temperate rainforest. With less than 60 days left before this important deadline, it's imperative that our message is heard and heard quickly. Tell B.C.'s government that a rainforest this rare and precious deserves protection and that your support depends on their willingness to keep the promise.
With your help, we will ensure that Premier Campbell will "Keep the Promise" to safeguard the Great Bear Rainforest for generations to come.
With great thanks,
Stephanie Goodwin
